Chapters and Pages is a face-to-face children’s book club that was formed with my very own scholars in my very own classroom. It is extremely essential that young minds apprehend that all types of literature can be interesting and a delight to read. Also, it’s imperative for our youth to believe that using their metacognition skills to have respectful conversations about particular books will allow their brains to expand as their vocabulary increases.
After completing a few book clubs with my students which only required reading specific pages at home and discussing those pages during lunch, I immediately observed comprehension growth, full interest in the selection, and pure elation to confer in every single student. It instantly dawned on me that I should extend my expertise and passion to more readers; after all, reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.
I’m Valecia Broussard, the founder and director of Chapters and Pages.
I graduated from Texas Southern University and have been an educator for the past six years. I specialize in English Language Arts or as most individuals know it, Reading. I know firsthand that the most effective way to become an avid reader is to simply read more. It brings me absolute gratitude to know that I deliver solid lessons, model awesome thinking strategies, and literally witness my students’ blossom into academic excellence on a daily. I am an advocate for elevating children to reach their full intellectual potential as well as reading being a major factor in personal advancement.
My goal is to inspire children to conclude that there is power in the written word and become true to self while doing so. Chapters and Pages will offer exciting and innovative ways to comprehend using rigorous questioning techniques and one-on-one motivation. I can be best described as lively, dedicated, prepared, hardworking, and organized. I also enjoy quality time with my family and friends, traveling, reading, and continuously elevating my craft.
Look down below! Check out some of our dear old favorites that inspired the start of our bookclub. Some of these timeless classics will be featured in our upcoming sessions!
'Wonder' by RJ Palacio is a classic kids must-read! This one is special to us because this was the book that started it all at our book club! August Pullman was born with a facial difference that, up until now, has prevented him from going to a mainstream school. Starting 5th grade at Beecher Prep, he wants nothing more than to be treated as an ordinary kid--but his new classmates can't get past Auggie's extraordinary face.
'A Wrinkle in Time' by Madeleine L' Engle is another fav of ours that is timeless and inspiring. "It was a dark and stormy night; Meg Murry, her small brother Charles Wallace, and her mother had come down to the kitchen for a midnight snack when they were upset by the arrival of a most disturbing stranger..."
'Diary of a Wimpy Kid' by Jeff Kinney also tops our list as a club favorite at Chapters and Pages. It’s a new school year, and Greg Heffley finds himself thrust into middle school, where undersized weaklings share the hallways with kids who are taller, meaner, and already shaving. The hazards of growing up before you’re ready are uniquely revealed through words and drawings as Greg records them in his diary.
In book one of this debut series, Greg is happy to have Rowley, his sidekick, along for the ride. But when Rowley’s star starts to rise, Greg tries to use his best friend’s newfound popularity to his own advantage, kicking off a chain of events that will test their friendship in hilarious fashion.
